While many crinoids are known as “sea lilies” for their stalked, flower-like appearance, Antedon is a feather star, meaning it lacked a permanent stalk and was capable of swimming or crawling along the seafloor. The preservation of articulated crinoids is exceedingly rare, as their bodies typically disarticulate quickly after death into hundreds of small plates. Finding a complete Antedon with its fine arms and central body (calyx) intact is a triumph of fossilization, making this specimen scientifically invaluable for studying the morphology and evolution of mobile crinoids during the Cretaceous.
